My answer is by themselves; no, they cannot. The choices we make in life define who we will become, they define who we are. We as humans seem to become molded, and once we harden we must be completely remade. And God is the only one who can “remake” us. He is the potter, we are merely the clay. Who are we to tell our maker how we want to be shaped? Like a cup without a handle, we our selves, with out God are useless. But God wants to use us, shape us, he wants us to become his unique creation. He will never take over our lives, but he wants to be a part of us. Yes, to a certain extent we ourselves can change, like a friend just brought to attention to me, someone without God could quit smoking. But this is the outside of a person. When it comes to the heart of someone; He is the one who changes us. Only with God can we change. He is the one who makes us. He is the way. He is the truth. He is the life. Thing is; some live without it.

It is true that the truest form of change cannot happen without the help of an Omniscient Creator God…. However, there are some changes that can occur without God. Man does not lack the ability to reason. A person who constantly runs into walls will stop after a while, out of sheer logic rather than Divine Intervention.
So, what does it mean to change, Jeremiah tells us that “The heart is deceitful above all things, and it is exceedingly perverse and corrupt and severely, mortally sick! Who can know it [perceive, understand, be acquainted with his own heart and mind]? (Jeremiah 17:9). The heart is evil, and cannot be changed except though the power of God. This means that the heart is no longer what it was, but is now a heart directed and inhabited by the Holy Spirit. That is where the true change happens.
There are, however, some changes that occur without God specifically involved. Someone who is an atheist and smokes, and has been smoking for many years, gets on Nicorete and is weaned off smoking…. That is change, but was God involved? To a certain degree yes, but it was more of human logic in this case..

In my opinion, I do believe that God is the soul source for a true change of “heart”. Deep inside every human being, there is only a place that God can fill. When we allow God into this place in our lives, we can no longer sit back and be comfortable in a place that God cannot inhabit. So in all reality, the moment that we decide to make Jesus our Lord and Ruler over our lives, we essentially make the choice to be changed and transformed. It is true, God gave us will power to conquer the petty, natural addictions and bondages that tend to plague mankind, but his hand is never too far to reach in and help. Some people can pick up some Nicorete and kick the habit, but some people truly do need God to change them and to deliver them from addiction– so in essence.. we really are never COMPLETELY ever able to change without God. God always plays a role somewhere— even the smallest of things. So, I agree with you, John!
